My MATS Prep – Upcoming Children’s Book Course

 01

Lilla Roger’s Make Art That Sells, Illustrating Children’s Books course is right around the corner, so Monday, the participants began #mymatsprep, which are 5 mini assignments, leading up to a final piece.  I combined character with environment, to see how I might create in this course using my non-dominant hand.  In these 5 mini assignments (which anyone can try by the way!), we will learn about:

  • character
  • setting
  • scale and perspective
  • scene magic
  • environment

We had to draw a character from a vintage photo of a relative of Lilla’s.  How fun!  I decided to put her in a “Secret Garden” and add the France Hodgson Burnett quote from her lovely book.  “Minette” is a curious little girl who loves to explore and make up imaginary adventures, while real life takes her on daily explorations and journeys of her magical world.

On day three, we were to “flip” our world.  Make tiny things huge and big things little, in other words.  I painted giant flowers, small animals, large birds and a small garden gate.  I flipped my garden!  Here is the result:

More to come!  See you soon!
